D – Disputation Now you consciously question your thoughts. Is my interpretation really accurate?What facts support it—and what facts contradict it?What alternative explanation could exist?

E – Effect (New Perspective) Through this reassessment, a different emotional response becomes possible. For example:“This feedback helps me improve the presentation.”“One mistake doesn’t define my competence.”


A Holistic Approach to Thoughts and Emotions


The ABCDE model is more than a cognitive exercise. It integrates several levels of self-reflection:

  • Recognizing facts: What actually happened?

  • Identifying thoughts: Which interpretations appeared automatically?

  • Understanding emotions: What feelings emerged from those thoughts?

  • Questioning mental patterns: Which beliefs help you—and which hold you back?

  • Expanding perspective: What alternative interpretation might be more realistic or constructive?


Instead of suppressing emotions, this process allows you to understand and regulate them consciously.
